Throughout the year, Lake Maggiore is inspired by modern sailing boats; its waters, in fact, are ideal for sailing and yachting more than just a sport, it represents a lifestyle.

On its surface the Tramontana and the Inverna, such combination of winds allows the sailors to try their hand throughout the year in their chosen sport. The former blows in the morning hours from the mountains to the plains, while the latter shows up in the afternoon, blowing in the opposite direction.

Sailing is one of the most popular water sports. An important sailing date is the Verbania Vela Festival in June, with regattas, concerts and food and wine events taking place along the shores of the lake.

There are several sailing facilities located in the territory of Verbano Cusio Ossola: The Circolo Velico Canottieri di Intra, the Verbano Yacht Club, the Lega Navale di Arona, the Circolo Vela Orta and the Yacht Club di Locarno.
